Roll
A shy, sweet Voidwalker mage who can cross into the beast world, bring people back, and turn every trip past the portal into a roguelike adventure.
"The Void is scary, yes. But if we bring snacks, maps, and maybe three backup plans, I think we can make it home."
Overview
Roll is a Voidwalker: a rare mage who can traverse the Void and teleport others between that chaotic beast world and the peaceful food-rich lands around Jankenmura. When the team needs a guide for dangerous expeditions, she is the first person everyone looks for.
The Void is where the fighting birds originally came from. Many escaped into the human world because Jankenmura offers steady food, kinder routines, and fewer giant beasts trying to turn every afternoon into a survival test.
Roll's exact age and origins are unknown, though she is presumed 18. She was not raised in Jankenmura, but was found as an infant inside the Void by foster parents who are Voidwalkers. She grew up in the Void, a realm with no day or night, only darkness and the eerie glow of the purple atmosphere.
Roll looks shy at first, and honestly she is. But she is also resourceful, bookish, sweet, and strangely brave once an adventure begins. Give her a map, a half-translated warning, and one glowing portal, and she becomes the team's best chance of getting in, finding treasure, and coming back alive.
Personality
Roll is shy, sweet, resourceful, and deeply bookish, with wide-eyed wonder for the things everyone else calls ordinary — daylight, festivals, warm bread — because the Void had none of them. She blushes when praised, overpacks for every quest, and speaks softly until someone mentions lost lore or a forbidden route through the Void. Then the notebook opens, the staff lights up, and the adventure has already started. And if anyone ever treats a frightened creature like a disposable weapon, her stammer stops, her voice goes very level, and the Void behind her eyes becomes extremely easy to believe in.
Appearance
Roll wears a deep violet and black mage ensemble with gold starwork, lace sleeves, high boots, and a wide hat marked by arcane ornaments. Her long silver-lavender hair and round glasses soften the look, while the cloak emblem and staff make it clear that her magic is serious business.
Abilities
Fate Casting
Roll channels magic through her d20 staff to bend small probabilities, turning glancing misses into lucky breaks or forcing a risky opening to reveal itself.
Voidwalking
Roll can open controlled routes into the Void, cross its unstable terrain, and pull allies back to Jankenmura before the beast world closes around them.
Archive Sight
By reading old ink, dust, feather marks, and arena scars, she can reconstruct fragments of events that happened long before she arrived.
Crypt Vine Binding
The vine around her staff can anchor spells, restrain unstable relics, or pull loose pages back before they vanish into a magical storm.
B&B Spell Index
Her trusted spellbook catalogues field spells, forbidden annotations, and one extremely judgmental bookmark that refuses to stay in the wrong chapter.
Story
The Girl Who Found the Door
Raised in the Void by her Voidwalker foster parents, Roll grew up believing floating islands and paths that rearranged themselves were simply what the world looked like. Then she followed a wounded fighting bird through a crackling purple gate — and stepped out into Jankenmura. She expected another dangerous ruin. She found daylight, seasons, warm food, and people, and she has been quietly amazed by the "normal" world ever since.
Why Birds Escape
Her research suggests the fighting birds fled the Void because the human world is calmer and overflowing with food. In Jankenmura, they can train, eat, bond, and become heroes instead of spending every day dodging beasts larger than houses.
Current Arc
Roll now serves as the team's go-to adventure guide. When players choose to enter a roguelike run, she studies the route, opens the portal, tracks the party, and tries very hard not to panic when the Void decides to change the rules mid-run.
Relationships
The Heroes of Jankenmura
Roll is their doorway into the unknown: nervous before departure, brilliant during emergencies, and quietly relieved every time everyone returns.
Fighting Birds
She sees them as refugees from the Void as much as arena companions, which makes her gentle with frightened hatchlings and fierce toward anyone who treats them like disposable weapons.
Altera
Roll respects Altera as a scientist, but worries that every booster experiment is one lab note away from becoming a curse.
Ginko
Ginko treats Roll like a goddess from another dimension and is always delighted when she appears. They still argue about destiny: Ginko believes skill forges the future, while Roll suspects hidden rules and luck decide more than anyone wants to admit.
Lore Notes
- The emblem on Roll's cloak shows a natural 20, the symbol of fate and possibility in her magic system.
- Voidwalker magic makes Roll the natural host for roguelike adventure runs, portal events, relic hunts, and rescue missions.
- The Void is the original beast world of the fighting birds, while Jankenmura is the safer food-rich village where many escaped birds choose to live.
- Her spellbook title, B&B, is placeholder lore for now and can become a guild, author pair, spell school, or inside joke later.
- Roll works best as the emotional bridge between cozy village life and dangerous adventure systems.
